Study John 6

Today’s study is intense.  It is a long chapter and it contains some thoughts that are at first hard to understand.  This chapter also offers some great spiritual truth to the reader who endeavor’s to understand the words of Jesus recorded by John.  We first find Jesus on the east side of the Sea of Galilee confronted with a hungry crowd of people.

Chapter 6 Study Questions

  1. What benefit did the crowd receive from Jesus’ miracle?
  2. When they realized what Jesus had done, what did they try to do to Jesus (6:15)?
  3. What does Jesus say is their real motive in following him over the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum (6:26)?

In this chapter Jesus says that He is the Bread of Life that comes down from heaven.

  1. Is bread (food) important for physical life?
  2. According to Jesus, which is more important, literal bread or the Bread from heaven?
  3. If the Bread from heaven is so important, how do people partake of this “bread”? (see 6:35)
  4. What is Jesus’ offer to someone who comes and believes in Him (6:40)?
  5. Jesus said, “The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh” (6:51). What significant event might Jesus be alluding to?
  6. Why do you think some of Jesus’ disciples stopped following Him after he taught these things?
  7. What reason does Simon Peter give for staying with Jesus (6:68-69)?

Chapter 6 Answers

  1. They were “satisfied” with food.
  2. They tried to make him king.
  3. He is someone who will give them what they want (i.e. food).
  4. Yes
  5. Bread from heaven.
  6. One must come to and believe in Jesus.
  7. He offers eternal life and a “raising up” to those who believe.
  8. His sacrificial death.
  9. Some of the people following Jesus did not understand that Jesus was speaking in a “spiritual” manner about his body and blood.
